She was angry. Or if not that, she was hurt. He could feel it roiling within her, her feelings a crackling, physical presence looming between them.
It wasn't what he'd intended, but this was new territory. She seemed in need of comfort, or at least reassurance, and he had no idea how to give it to her.
"No, I wanted you to have it," he said, his coat held between both hands, feeling more ridiculous than he had in a long time.
"If you go that direction, you'll hit the tracks, then you can follow them south," he said, with a jerk of his chin ahead of them. "If you prefer to go alone."
